Paper Bag Eleganza - by @ashperrie
I was working as a dancer on a cruise ship in South America when the Corona virus pandemic hit. We unfortunately had a Covid-19 outbreak onboard and all countries closed their borders on us. I ended up being stranded at sea for 60 days as many countries banned crew from disembarking. After already completing three separate quarantine periods onboard in cabin isolation, I faced another two weeks of hotel quarantine on arrival home to Perth. I wanted to do something creative to fill the time and keep myself busy.
Our three daily meals were delivered to our hotel rooms and left outside the door in paper bags. These bags became my inspiration to create a range of outfits made completely from recycled materials that came with the meals. Along with the bags I used napkins, disposable cutlery, biodegradable containers and cardboard drink coasters to construct the outfits. It began with the idea of a paper bag gown, but the more I played around, the more creative my mind became and the more ideas I came up with. I created 5 designs in total including race wear, formal wear, a ballerina tutu, a tennis outfit with a racket and a superhero costume.
I called my range of recycled designs 'PAPER BAG ELEGANZA’ and modelled each outfit around my hotel room. It was a great little project that kept me positive and focused during my time in isolation and I hope that it can inspire other people during these tough times.
Quarantine and isolation can be extremely difficult for a lot of people and is often very mentally straining. I hope that it encourages people to make the most of their time in isolation and by keeping busy, the time flies ! Hotel quarantine has become a positive memory for me to look back on during this crazy time in our lives.
