"I’ve been a member of this group [the Kindness Pandemic] for the last month, and in my day job, I’m also the Head of the Facebook App. ... Every day, I am amazed by the incredible stories of kindness that I see happen in this group. Thank you Catherine for your dedication and sharing your heart with all of us by managing such an inspiring community. And thanks to all of you - all 550,000+ of you - who come together to share your stories with one another and make the world a better place. Right now more than ever, you remind us all that kindness is universal and transcends all borders. The Kindness Pandemic gives many—including myself—a reason to smile each day." Fidji Simo, Head of Facebook App (2020)
"Come Together: Join The Kindness Pandemic Facebook group for your daily reminder that there is good in the world (even when you’re down to your last roll of toilet paper with no hope in sight). Members share heartwarming stories, like people putting friendly notes in elderly neighbours’ letterboxes offering help, and strangers anonymously leaving bags of groceries on the front steps of those who are struggling (toilet paper included)." About The Kindness Pandemic
The Kindness Pandemic is an initiative of Celebrate Ageing Ltd, a charity combatting ageism and building respect for older people.
It was established in March, 2020 by Dr Catherine Barrett, to support people doing it tough due to the COVID19 pandemic. With a team of 12 wonderful volunteers, the group promotes intersectional kindness (see anatomy of Kindness here), grew to 570,000+ members in two weeks and hosted over 40 campaigns. An invitation to set up local groups resulted in 70 groups being established around the world. In a survey of members, 86% said that being a member of the group improved their mental wellbeing and in 2021 the group was awarded the Most Uplifting Facebook Group in the World (see below).
The enduring legacies of the Kindness Pandemic are a global kindness movement and GenK or Generational Kindness - bringing older and younger people together to combat ageism, promote acts of kindness for people doing it tough in their local community and build a better world.
