#MaskKindness
All of us want Coronavirus to be gone. But it isn't. And to be honest, few of us want to wear a face mask - but the science shows that wearing a face mask can reduce our risk of getting Coronavirus by up to 80%. That's quite a lot!!
Health professionals are used to wearing surgical face masks. But for most of us, wearing a mask is not something we've considered. That's now changed. On July 10th 2020, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Deputy Chief Medical Officer Nick Coatsworth said residents in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire should wear masks when physical distancing can't be maintained. This means if we have to leave our homes (for any of the permissible reasons) and we are in a situation where we can't maintain 1.5-metre distance, we need to wear a face mask. The Rail, Train and Bus Union have also called for masks to be mandatory, because of congestion on public transport (see link).
The #MaskKindness campaign recognises that wearing a face mask can protect us and the people we love from Coronavirus. It is an act of kindness. Our campaign encourages mask wearing (we care about you) through selfies that help people to see its okay to wear a mask. There are four parts to our Campaign:

- Mask making - making sure masks are accessible (and used properly)
- Mask selfies and masks at work - normalising mask wearing
- Mask posters - educating the community in various ways
- Mask patrons - leaders support for mask wearing.

D and communicating with people who are Deaf
Please be aware that people who are deaf or have hearing loss rely on facial expressions and lip-reading. This has led to calls for transparent face masks. If you are communicating with a person who is deaf or hard of hearing it may be important to check in how they would like you to communicate. It may be useful to rely more on written word and gestures. Options are currently being explored for transparent face masks and visor options. More information on communicating with people who are deaf see Deaf Australia link here.

There are two mask galleries. The first is for Masks in Place; or images of masks being used out in the community. The second is a Mask Selfie gallery; or images of people wearing a mask and telling us why they are wearing a mask. We invite artists and graphic designers to share images of their masks and links to their web and social media pages.

Masks for Aussies is part of a worldwide #masks4all project helping people in local communities to access volunteers and/or organisations making masks, donating PPE, fabric or community services specific to their needs. Our purpose is captured by our motto ‘I protect you and you protect me’. To do this we created a website to inform and educate the community about mask wearing by providing cited articles and videos specific to community mask wearing, to provide instructions for mask making and to host the Australian Mapotic map.
The Kindness Pandemic was established in March 2020 to promote intersectional kindness for people doing it tough during COVID19. The project's Facebook Group has 560,000 members and 23 campaigns have been rolled out with the support of 10 partnering organisations and 12 artists.
The Rail, Train and Bus Union (RTBU) is the voice of workers in Australia’s rail and public transport industries. It has around 35,000 members who works in light rail, passenger rail, freight rail, or on publicly-operated bus networks. The RTBU covers train and bus drivers, station staff, cleaners, train controllers, track maintenance workers and many others.
