About Stella and Mandy

When Stella Karakitsos was 5 years old she was out walking with her friend, who stepped on a landmine. Stella's friend died and Stella broke her back and spent the next 3 years in hospital. She learned how to be strong. Stella didn't have her own children - she had a beautiful relationship with her nieces and nephews, and she nurtured them through food.

When Mandy Carney was growing up, her Aunty Stella was like her second mother to her. Aunty Stella taught Mandy about resilience and helped her cultivate her passion for adventure. Mandy loved Stella's cooking, especially her Koulourakia, spinach pie, cheese pie and Galaktoboureko. Mandy calls Stella Filotima, which is Greek for kind heart.

When Mandy left Australia in 2010 to live in Brazil and become a professional adventurer, she pledged that if her Aunty Stella was ever sick, she would come home to look after her. In 2020, when Stella showed signs of dementia, Mandy kept her promise and moved home to live with and care for Aunty Stella.

About Stella Kindness

Stella Kindness is a story about intergenerational love and respect. It is also a story about beautiful Greek food. Now Mandy and Stella cook together every day. Mandy films Stella as she cooks, to share Stella's recipes on social media. The short films tell a story of mouthwatering food - and intergenerational kindness. Stella and Mandy have agreed to share their films to the Kindness Pandemic facebook group - to warm our hearts.
