Leadership in Lockdown
In July 2020, an outbreak of Coronavirus led to the 'hard lockdown' of 3000 people in nine public housing towers in Melbourne. Within minutes of the announcement, a heavy police presence was established at the towers to monitor the lockdown. The experience of hard lockdown for so many residents will be deeply distressing, particularly for those needing essential support and connection.
These residents are valued community members, many of whom throughout this pandemic have continued to provide essential support as health and care workers, retail, drivers, security, cleaners and other frontline services. We need to reach out to support the residents and we need to embrace their strengths, knowledge and capacities.
The Kindness Pandemic has partnered with drummond st services to help support the 3000 Victorians in hard lockdown. Our focus is on sharing stories and strategies for getting through lockdown. The #LeadershipInLockdown Campaign recognises that residents are experts in their own lives - and we offer a space for sharing their expertise with other residents; with a particular focus on supporting children in lockdown.
We also recognise the importance of reaching out to residents to tell them we care - particularly given many of the residents were marginalised prior to lockdown. The Campaign calls on the broader community to support residents in Hard lock down with Big kindness to build a bridge that endures beyond lockdown.
